Early in her life, Mary Ann Plankinton became interested in how the law affects people. She grew up in a 1768 farmhouse in Kennett Township, and when she was very young her family found original documents and a title search that said British soldiers were there in 1777 and took the deeds to the house away with them, caus-ing a long-term complication in the owners' legal situation. This incident long ago in Mary Ann's own home gave rise to a strong interest in history and the law.
After graduating from St. Joseph's University with a degree
in political science, Mary Ann worked for the late Senator John Heinz,
researching federal grants for his constituents. Here she discovered that
many people are unfamiliar with their basic constitutional rights. This
inspired Mary Ann to pursue a law degree from the Widener University School
of Law. Mary Ann's parents instilled in her a belief that education is
essential for personal growth and progress in society, and she wanted
to help people become more knowledgeable about their own rights. "Practicing
law allows me to work toward this goal," she says.
Mary Ann went on to establish a well-respected family law practice. At
MacElree Harvey she concentrates on divorce, support, custody and adoption,
and estate planning and administration. Mary Ann also handles real estate
and general litigation. As a member of the Pennsylvania Council of Mediators
and the Delaware Alternative Dispute Resolution committee, Mary Ann is
able to provide alternative dispute resolution and mediation as an option
for client matters. The Delaware Family Courts have appointed Mary Ann
as a guardian ad litem to represent children's best interests in legal
proceedings.
In addition to being a member of the Delaware and Pennsylvania Bar Associa-tions,
Mary Ann has served on the Board of Directors of the Chester County Bar
Association. She has also served on several civic boards of directors,
including the Kennett Square YMCA, Chester County Futures, and the Kennett
Township Planning Commission.
Mary Ann also continues to believe in and support education. She has taught
classes in aqua-kinetics at the YMCA, and volunteers with the Continuing
Educa-tion Department of Longwood Gardens. She also designs flowers for
weddings and other celebrations, and has created arrangements for events
at Winterthur Museum & Country Estate, Hagley Museum, and the Wilmington
Country Club.
